‘If the kids lost the squash court it would be devastating for them’

One of New Mills’ junior squash coaches Matthew Thomas put a heartfelt video on his social media this week.

Kids playing squash at New Mills Leisure Centre

Speaking of the potential threat of closure to New Mills’ squash court he said “So if the kids lost the squash court in New Mills it would be devastating for them. Lots of them love coming down here on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday just to run around, and lots of them are really improving and entering tournaments and they’d be losing a sport that they love.”

Last week it was discovered that the council we be holding a public consultation meeting on the Tuesday the third of December. No details are known other than this meeting will be part of a 6 week broader consultation period starting in late November and finishing in early January.

The council will be consulting people around a range of options; it’s unknown at this stage what this means for the squash court, or indeed the sports hall which could be reduced in size.

Campaigners are encouraging as many people to come down as possible “Every person in the room will help to show the council how strongly the community feel on this matter. Squash is thriving in New Mills and it would be devastating to lose the court.”
